about

‘REFLECTIONS ON METAL, WATER, EYES’ is a live-recorded structured improvisation in three sections (as the title suggests).

Partially inspired by French electronic artist Eliane Radigue’s ‘L’ile re-sonante’ in which she meditates on her face reflected in water (the ‘real’ image vs. the distortion of the reflection), the track focuses on elements of the experience of the listed materials beyond their ‘original’ state or physicality – the way metal can impose itself coldly and starkly in a space, or how bodies of water have the capability to gently envelop, engulf and wash away.

As for eyes, the unsettling feeling of perceiving your own image for a moment in the reflection of someone’s gaze (revealing the weight of self-hood and power in the ability to influence or enact on a person) was used as inspiration.

The instrumentation for the improvisation is comprised of everyday objects like rice bowls, necklaces, windchimes and a bowl of water as well as various ‘classical’ percussion instruments and a feedbacking amp.

These sounds emerge, blend, and disappear into each other organically as the music evolves and transitions between materials in the same way they interact and relate to each other in the physical world.
